CALL FOR NOMINATION: JUNIOR AND SENIOR STAFF AWARDS - 2021

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) is pleased to inform all Junior and Senior Staff of the School that, nominations are opened for the Best Worker Awards for 2021.

The purpose of the award scheme is to recognize excellence in the main areas of the School’s endeavors and appreciate staff who demonstrate outstanding service and make significant contributions to the School in particular, and the University as a whole.

A. Who is eligible for this award?

· Nominees must have served the mandatory probation period.

· Nominees must have served in the University for a minimum of three (3) years.

 

B. Criteria for Nomination:

· A nomination form (BWA Form 1) shall be completed and endorsed by a nominator.

· The nomination dossier shall include copies of a nominee’s Annual Performance Appraisal Forms.

 

C. The Awards Committee shall:

· Seek the views of a nominee’s stakeholders (students, colleagues, subordinates, and superiors) to assess nominee’s performance and interpersonal relationship;

· Request confidential assessment by the nominee’s Head of Department (BWA Form 2); and

· Determine if there are any disciplinary cases against a nominee.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: THE DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARD - 2021

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) is pleased to inform all faculty members in the School that, nominations are opened for the Distinguished Teacher Award for 2021.

The Distinguished Teacher Award is given to a faculty member in recognition of outstanding contribution to teaching and pedagogical leadership. This contribution could be a long-term cumulative contribution, or a single particularly insightful idea, experiment, application, or interpretation.

A. Who is eligible for this award?

· A nominee must be a faculty member with three (3) or more consecutive years of teaching in the School.

· A nominee must demonstrate commitment to the University and the School by way of other services rendered.

 

B. Criteria for Nomination:

A candidate shall be nominated by two (2) faculty members in the School. The nomination package must include:

i. A nomination form (DTAF Form 1) completed and endorsed by a nominator.

ii. Nominee’s Teaching Load Records (UAB Form 2D).

iii. A letter from the nominators (not exceeding three (3) pages) summarizing the candidate’s teaching achievements and leadership, and national and international significance of teaching accomplishments.

iv. Nominee’s Curriculum Vitae (CV) in the University’s model. The CV should indicate:

· number of successful candidates supervised within the last three (3) years both at the graduate and undergraduate levels;

· number of students currently being supervised;

· names and contact details of a maximum of five (5) successful candidates supervised (including both undergraduate and postgraduate students); and

· names and contact details of a maximum of five (5) mentees (students mentored in the course of the nominee’s work as academic advisor, patron, hall master/mistress and hall tutors).

v. A document on the nominee’s teaching philosophy, reflective of best practice as indicated in the in-class teaching observation tool (UAB Form 2C). The teaching philosophy should indicate the nominee’s beliefs and values, reasons for such beliefs and values, and how they are translated into practice in teaching and learning.

 

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: THE BEST RESEARCHER AWARD - 2021

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) is pleased to inform all faculty members that, nominations are opened for the Best Researcher Award for 2021.

The Best Researcher Award is given to faculty members in the School with outstanding and original scientific article(s) published between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021.

A. Categories of Best Researcher Award

i. Promising Researcher

ii. Distinguished Researcher

 

i. PROMISING RESEARCHER AWARD

Who is eligible for this award?

· Nominees must be PhD holders younger than forty (40) years in age on the date of nomination deadline.

· Nominees must be faculty members of the School for less than four (4) years on the date of nomination deadline.

 

Criteria for Nomination:

Candidates shall be nominated by two (2) faculty members in the School. The nomination package must include:

a. A letter from the nominators (not exceeding three (3) pages) summarizing:

· the nominee’s research achievements; and

· the national and international significance of the nominee’s scholarly works.

b. Copies of up to three (3) key publications of exceptional scientific quality related to the work for which the faculty member has been nominated. The publications should meet the following criteria:

· novelty, creativity and originality;

· significant contribution to knowledge in the nominee’s field of expertise; and

· Published in a high impact journal listed in the Scopus and/or Web of Science database.

c. Current Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the nominee in the University’s standardized format.

d. Two (2) letters of support from scholars in the nominee’s main or cognate fields commenting on the import and impact of the candidates work nationally and internationally. At least one (1) of the letters must be from scholars outside the School.

 

ii. DISTINGUISHED RESEARCHER AWARD

Who is eligible for this award?

· Nominees must be faculty members with a minimum of three (3) years of service.

 

Criteria for Nomination:

Candidates shall be nominated by two (2) faculty members in the School. The nomination package must include:

a. A letter from the nominators (not exceeding three (3) pages) summarizing:

· the nominee’s research achievements; and

· the national and international significance of the nominee’s scholarly works.

b. Copies of up to five (5) key publications of exceptional scientific quality related to the work for which the faculty member has been nominated. The publications should meet the following criteria:

· significant contribution to knowledge in the nominee’s field of expertise; and

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: THE DISTINGUISHED AWARD FOR RESOURCE MOBILISATION - 2021

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) is pleased to inform all faculty and Staff that, nominations are opened for the Distinguished Award for Resource Mobilisation for 2021.

The Distinguished Award for Resource Mobilisation is given to faculty and/or staff who mobilize or raise financial or material resources for the School.

A. Who is eligible for this award?

· Nominees must have completed their probationary period.

· Nominees must be full-time faculty or staff of the School.

 

B. Criteria for Nomination:

A candidate shall be nominated by two (2) faculty members or staff in the School. The nomination package shall include:

i. A letter from the nominators summarizing the nominee’s resource mobilisation achievements (not exceeding three (3) pages).

ii. Evidence of resources mobilised during the year 2021.

iii. Indication of total value of resources mobilized during the year 2021.

iv. Evidence of how the resources were utilised in the Department, School, or University.

 

Deadline for all Nominations:

The complete application dossier (as indicated in B above) should reach the Dean not later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2022.
