The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) successfully commemorated the 2026 Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA) with an insightful event on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. The gathering, held at the WACCBIP Conference Room, featured a high-level panel discussion centered on the theme, ‘Ghana’s AI Strategy and the Role of Academia, Students, and Industry in Building a Research-Driven Innovation Ecosystem’.
The event was chaired by Prof. Eric Dominic Forson, a Lecturer at the Department of Physics, UG. In guiding the session, he highlighted the critical timing of the conversation as artificial intelligence continues to reshape global industries, emphasizing the necessity for Ghanaian academia and industry to collaboratively drive this technological frontier.
The core of the celebration was a dynamic panel discussion that brought together a diverse group of experts representing various facets of the technology and academic ecosystem. The panel featured Mr. Isaac Boakye-Manu (Digital & Innovations Lead, Thrive & Shine LBG, and Master's student, UG); Dr. Issah Seidu (Lecturer, Dept. of Statistics and Actuarial Science, UG); Mr. Timothy Owusu (CEO, LangXchange); and Dr. Akon Obu Ekpezu (Research Associate, HCI Lab, Dept. of Computer Science, UG, and Part-time Lecturer, GIMPA).
During the engaging session, the panelists explored how students, researchers, and corporate entities can synergize to foster an indigenous, research-driven innovation ecosystem. The conversation underscored the importance of building robust AI strategies that address local challenges while preparing students to take active roles in the digital economy.
The program was expertly hosted and moderated by Dr. Ralph Agyei Twum, a Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics. The event concluded with an interactive session, leaving attendees—comprising students, faculty, and industry enthusiasts—inspired to actively contribute to Africa's ongoing scientific and technological renaissance.
