Overview of Programmes

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) offers a wide range of programmes at the Undergraduate, Graduate, and Postgraduate levels, aimed at developing scientifically grounded, innovative, and globally competitive graduates. The School provides rigorous training in the physical, mathematical, computational, and earth sciences, equipping students with the theoretical knowledge, analytical competence, practical skills, and research capabilities required for professional practice, advanced study, and leadership in academia, industry, government, and emerging technology sectors.

SPMS hosts programmes in the following disciplinary areas:

  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Earth Science
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Statistics and Actuarial Science

At the undergraduate level, students are introduced to broad scientific foundations in their first two years before progressing to more specialized study in their chosen disciplines. To provide flexibility and encourage interdisciplinary learning, the School supports different academic pathways, including:

  • Single Major, where students specialize in one primary discipline;
  • Combined Major, where students pursue two related disciplines with substantial academic depth in both areas; and
  • Major–Minor, where students combine a primary field of specialization with a secondary supporting discipline.

These pathways enable students to tailor their academic experience to their career aspirations, research interests, and emerging opportunities in science and technology.

The School also benefits from strong collaboration with other units of the University of Ghana, allowing students to enrich their training through approved elective courses and interdisciplinary exposure in areas such as the biological sciences, environmental sciences, nuclear sciences, behavioral sciences, data science, and related applied fields.

Through its teaching, laboratory training, fieldwork, and research activities, SPMS is committed to producing graduates who can apply scientific knowledge creatively and ethically to address national, regional, and global challenges.
