HISTORY

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) consists of six departments. They are
• Department of Chemistry
• Department of Computer Science
• Department of Earth Science
• Department of Mathematics
• Department of Physics
• Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science

These departments were carved out of some of the existing units in the then Faculty of Science to form the SPMS in August 2014. The School is one of the six constituent units in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) of the University.

The various Departments under the School have built enviable reputation and recorded greater achievements for being one of the providers of top-quality education in the sciences spanning over half a century in the country.
Objectives of SPMS
The objectives of the School are as follows:
• To provide academic excellence in science education, research and innovation
• To enhance research and teaching capabilities of each unit to be centers of excellence
• To build capacity in training more postgraduate students
• To enhance collaboration with the public, academia and industry to achieve stated goals.
The School is committed to providing an environment conducive for teaching, learning and research.

The School will continue to provide a congenial atmosphere for effective teaching, learning, research, and community engagement, as well as the provision of workable solutions to industry. It looks forward to more collaboration with external stakeholders and alumni, to develop a more prosperous nation.

Our mission is to train innovative physical and mathematical scientists with cutting edge knowledge of discipline, who will drive the national science policy with utmost diligence and excellence thereby bringing the University and the Nation abreast of current state of knowledge and progress in the field of science.
